 Meeting Minutes

  1. Introductions – Welcome Phili (CASS program director) guest of Susan McKnight, visiting from Georgetown University.  Welcome Ben Teymouri (engineer, CDM).
  2. Chapter Business

·        Treasurer’s report states there is just over $15,000 in chapter account.

·        It was decided to move the membership meeting to the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  Meetings will continue to be held at 7:00 pm.

·        Members, please keep in mind that several positions (Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and University liaisons) will be coming up for election in June.  Elections, per bylaws, need to be completed by 9/1/2008.

·        A preliminary funding allocation proposal was distributed for member review.  The draft noted allocation of chapter funds to 50% support university chapter projects, 30% to support GPPC projects, and 20% for general operating expenses.  A motion was made and agreed upon to adjust this to 40% university support, 40% GPPC support, and 20% general operating expenses.

·        North Grand Neighborhood Services is a cause our chapter has committed to help with every 2nd Saturday of the month.  The next one is May 10, 2008, from 9 am – 1 pm.  Lunch is provided.  Please contact Amy Drewing for the meeting location and to RSVP.

Wash. U. EWB participates in this.

Susan McKnight noted that she intends to get the CASS students          involved.

·        Networking/Fundraiser will be held Thursday, May 22, 5:30 pm – 9 pm at Jive & Wail in Maplewood, MO.  $10 donation to be entered to raffle for Cardinals tickets.  Free appetizers and live music.  Amy distributed fliers for the event for members to pass out.  She will also send the flier file that can be emailed.  The donations from this event will primarily (90%) go to funding the chapter’s Honduras project.  The other 10% is required to go to EWB-USA.

  1. Washington Oversees Mission – Jay Quattlebaum and Janice Meyer were in attendance and Jay gave a brief summary of the WOM 2008 recent trip to Honduras.
    • WOM team worked primarily in remote location outside of Sulaco.
    • Their three main projects were 1) built a roof and floor for the “smoke house”, 2) built a new home for a woman and her niece that were found living under a tree, 3) built a roof and floor at the home of the “108 year old man”
    • Jay recommends that we pick a specific project and arrive with a plan
    • Jay and Janice suggest we check out the website www.projecthonduras.com
    • Our chapter should contact the American Embassy to register members traveling on the June trip.
    • WOM was asked how they decide on their fund allocation—WOM does not fund travel; biggest expense is 4WD vehicle rental while in Honduras

  1. GPPC – Honduras trip (Pimienta/Santa Rita)

·        June 1 – June 10, 2008

·        Members traveling are Jonathan Jump, Matt Volz, Melissa Allen, Jennifer Meyer, Drew Hess, and Joel Schrenk (MS&T student)

·        In Pimienta will build pilas and assess drinking water and erosion issues

·        In Santa Rita, will assess conditions, meet with community to re-establish contact, and identify the needs

·        Dale (member) has photos and plans of a wood cook stove which travel team should present to community for potential use

·        Jay (WOM) recommends that we could start on a few pilas per day, work with a local, use 2 -3 people per pila, and estimates we could complete 3 pilas per day

·        Team will assess area for future latrine

·        Janice will check with Dr. Ugarte on whether or not a community latrine is acceptable

·        Janice received information from Dr. Ugarte that US AID estimated cost of pipe from water tank to these 28 houses to be 94,000 limpira, or $5000 US dollars.

·        Team should investigate US AID water distribution plan and work to inform community of improvement plan for pipe and pila location in relation to house locations.  i.e. create a map, or sketch

·        Jay estimates the cost per pila to be $40 US and a typical work day to be from 7 am – 5 pm

·        While in Santa Rita team plans to investigate pipe size at potential flow meter locations, investigate potential of adding pressure relief valves, and meet with PLAN of Honduras

5.      Dave Schepers will leave in one week to travel to Rio Colorado, Bolivia with MS&T chapter.  Dave submitted funding request letter to Paula for reimbursement of $500 for purchase of electrical equipment to connect new generator for project.  Dave Hoffman will also be on this trip.
