EWB Gateway Professional Partners Chapter

General Membership Meeting

January 14, 2009

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Engineer’s Club


1.         Welcome and Introductions

The meeting attendance list is attached to these minutes.


2.         Budget Report

Bill Kremer provided an update on 2008 budget.

            Beginning Balance for 2008                $15,764

            Income                                                $7,689

            Expenses                                            ($6,506)

            Ending Balance for 2008                    $16,509

The fundraising summary currently shows negative earnings from the Rams Games.  A check was received recently that has not been posted which will then show earnings from this event.

3.         EWB National Report

a.         The EWB International Conference will be held in Milwaukee, WI March 26 through 29, 2009.  Early registration for the conference is until January 16, 2009.  For additional information on the conference visit:


b.         Visit the following website to learn about ways to obtain donations to EWB-USA. 


            After you join replyforall, the messages you send will show the cause you support and a financial sponsor as your signature.  The sponsor pays to reach you and the people you email, and replyforall shares the sponsor’s payment with the causes you select.  So you do what you already do.  The more people who join the mission, the more sponsors pay, and the more replyforall can give to causes.  When you join, be sure to click on “End World Poverty” and select “Engineers Without Borders”.

4.         2008 Accomplishments

Accomplishments in 2008 were outlined.  Highlights include the following:

·         A site assessment was conducted in Pimienta, Honduras in June 2008

·         Over $5,000 in funds was raised by our chapter.

·         Membership in 2008 is approximately 23 paid members.

·         Fundraisers included the Jive & Wail, a Golf Tournament, and Rams Games.

5.         2009 Projects and Opportunities

a.         Reminder to renew you national ($100) and local chapter dues ($10) for 2009.  Note if you renew your national chapter dues online it does not include the local chapter dues.  Local chapter dues should be forwarded to:

·         Medicine/Food for Kids PB Factory, Cap Haitien, Haiti


Southern Illinois University @ Edwardsville Student Chapter

·         Camp Ondessonk Bridge, Ozark, Illinois


Missouri University of Science & Technology Student Chapter

·         Erquis Sud Housing Project, Tarija, Bolivia

·         Water for Housing Project, Nahualate, Guatemala

·         Pedestrian Suspension Bridge, Tachachia, Bolivia

·         Water Tank and Distribution, Santiago, Honduras


A summary of the projects and their needs will be provided in the upcoming January Newsletter.  For additional information please refer to the presentation from this meeting which as been posted on the EWB-STL Google Group site.

6.         Rotary Fundraising

We continue to work with Rotary to identify funding for the Santa Rita and Pimienta projects.  We just received indication from Janice Meyer that a local Rotary has been identified in Honduras for the Pimienta project.  Additional detail on this will be posted as it becomes available.  Tom Kent has been in contact with Rotary in Copan Ruinas and they are interested in providing funding for the Santa Rita project when we are ready to begin to get funding.

Items that will need to be gathered for both projects include line item cost estimates based on in-country vendor bids for each expense in excess of $1,000.

7.         Student Project Funding

Gateway Professional Partners Chapter has funds for student projects in need.  Amy Drewing has developed a funding request form and will submit this for review.  The form once finalized will be made available to the student chapters with an indication of the amount of funds available.

8.         Newsletter

Missouri University of Science & Technology Student Chapter

The Missouri University of Science & Technology Student Chapter will be conducting two upcoming fundraising activities.

            The First Annual S&T Faculty Talent Show

            Friday, February 6, 7:30 pm Leach Theatre

            Tickets go on sale Jan 15th at the Leach Theatre box office 314-4219


            5K Run for Water

            April 5, 2009

            St. Louis Forest Park

9.         2009 Goals

Our 2009 goals include:

·         Increase membership

·         Increase meeting attendance

·         Raise funds

·         Increase project participation by professionals and students

·         Make progress on projects

·         Do good work
